HOW IT STARTED
"I literally taught myself how to sing by listening to Motown singers. Soul music was the only thing that spoke to me. In high school my choir teacher would try to reel me in a bit. I was scooping notes, adding some flair to the words, things like that. All things soul singers would do, but not really appropriate while singing sacred songs in a choir. It was solo time and everyone had to perform a song for the class. I was a freshman and was quite nervous to sing for all the upperclassmen. The song she picked for me was Poor Wayfaring Stranger. After some arguments I agreed to sing it as written so as to get a passing score. When the time came for me to perform it in front of the class, I changed my mind. I sang it how I wanted to and added in all the soul. I got glares from my teacher, but when I was done the reaction I got from the upperclassmen girls was all the assurance I needed to know I might be on to something."
